EG Graduates Athletes - May 1, 2025
On May 1, 2025, we hosted our inaugural Elk Grove Graduates event, celebrating the remarkable careers of alumni David Hernandez and Bill Cartwright. It was truly inspiring to watch these local legends return to their roots to share their blueprints for success with the next generation. While they represent different eras and disciplines, their shared connection to Elk Grove High School highlights a powerful legacy of excellence.
As a former MLB pitcher with a long and respected career in the big leagues, David Hernandez brings a perspective rooted in high-stakes consistency. Through his ownership of Sports Lab, he continues to pass on the specialized, technical training methods that kept him competitive at the highest level, fostering the next wave of athletic development.
Bill Cartwright’s legacy extends well beyond his three championship rings with the Chicago Bulls. As a former NBA player, coach, and now an author, he emphasizes the intellectual side of the game. His transition into writing serves as a powerful reminder to students that the most important lessons are often about adaptability and leadership.
Despite their different paths, both athletes touched on several universal truths that resonated with the community. They shared how sports taught them to bounce back from losing situations and personal setbacks, and both credited the coaches and teachers in Elk Grove for providing the discipline and structure necessary for their professional journeys. Finally, they emphasized that success is most meaningful when you use your platform to elevate your hometown.
